Many projects I’m involved with right now are about how to bring people together, creating connections that in turn, lead to meaningful and focused action. I’ve helped to shape spaces where teams from different organisations can explore and decide how they work together to address challenges like improving communications or actions to support climate change. And, I’ve been in several discussions about placed-based working - hybrid, remote, office-based – and how these models can work more effectively.
The golden thread is a purposeful intention to bring people together, build great relationships and get better results. This focus on intention will become increasingly important as things to continue to shift – whether that’s our ways of working or across society as a whole.
These shifts demand a longer-term rethink of what work looks like in organisations, what the experience will be for employees and how cultures might need to change accordingly.
I’m pretty sure this won’t include quick fixes like “let’s bring people into the office on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday” or even bringing people back into an office full-time. The purpose should be to make decisions WITH people and not FOR people them if you want to get the best results.
Instead, there will need to be a consideration of the long-term benefits of different approaches that will have a positive impact on an organisation, its people and the bottom-line. Having regular opportunities to think about culture, what flexibility means for people and what it looks like, whatever the team or organisation. There won’t be a one-size fits all.
If you take the time to continually involve your people in the evolution of that change, flex your approach as needed and communicate effectively, it will help you shape the right solutions for your organisation. It will drive the transitions and transformation you need.
