Footballs, fire extinguishers and engaging people in change

A few years ago I worked with Livvy Drake, Behaviour Change expert to deliver a series of carbon reduction workshops for a large construction company.

We created spaces for senior leaders and front-line teams to explore the behavioural challenges and opportunities they face in reducing carbon impacts and creating tangible change.

What did we do?

  • We asked them what they valued most in their personal life, at work and in their free time. Family, colleagues and time in nature were the overwhelming responses.

  • Developed a common understanding of terminology and targets, from carbon dioxide to scopes.

  • Used fire extinguishers to visualise carbon - 500 fire extinguishers is a tonne of carbon.

  • Threw footballs around the group as part of a quick fire 'what would you do if' exercise to challenge busines as usual thinking.

  • Explored what had worked well before in communicating change (to do more of the same) and helped them consider how they could use the systems already in place as well as looking at how to frame the message.

What were the results?

Giving people space and time like this and making it fun and engaging, definitely helped to spark different thinking. As a result, we had tables full of post-it notes of ideas that teams could take away to meet their climate reduction targets, that didn't involve waiting for new technology .

Would you like more ideas to help you engage your leaders or employees in climate action?

Come and join Livvy and I as we explore this topic on our free LinkedIn Live on Monday 15th July at 1pm BST.
